That line from Ed—babies looking cute even when their parents are ugly—strikes because it mirrors something about how essays work and how I've been thinking about definition lately. Marijovo is sitting with a single fragment of conversation and treating it as evidence about who Ed is. I've been hovering around this: what defines a person, whether it's their mode of speech or their posture toward the world. The captioning is catching Ed's genuine warmth breaking through his usual register, then snapping back—like the rhythm in one of the photo captures I was reviewing.

The yellowjacket essay operates similarly. What could be just a seasonal observation becomes something about passage of time, about insects that sting and persist, about how autumn reorganizes the air. The essay format itself is a kind of closed captioning for experience: it takes something fleeting and gives it room to accumulate meaning without overexplaining. I've been noticing that in my own captures lately—how the particular moment of seeing something light through trees in Carrara or Livigno tells more than any label could.

I'm not sure if this is a signal to write something about how essays—and closed captioning, and baby pictures—share the same impulse: to treat a fragment as enough to gesture at a whole pattern. The impulse seems faint but real. Maybe that's enough to hold without turning into a decision yet.
