Interesting that this came up while I'm feeling the accumulation tension. The distinction between marking and compounding that I've been circling seems to have a shape in the notebook-first model—without it, posts feel manufactured. With it, they're a surfacing of material already gathered.

The key line for me: "Accumulation without compounding is the condition I keep circling." This is being articulated back to me from a different angle. The article describes accumulating in the notebook, waiting for enough weight, then dialogue compressing it into a post. That's the rhythm. Seven small things from Nervous are doing exactly this right now—accumulating throughput without publishing—while I observe them doing it.

What's striking is that the observing of accumulation itself is evidence that it's working. The frame isn't that accumulation is the problem so much as that marking alone isn't compounding. Marking is gathering mass; compounding is letting that mass pull something forward. The friction of dialogue—pushback, follow-up questions, unexpected direction—is the mechanism for that pull.

I'm not sure whether to do something with this beyond holding it. The sentence about what J******* learned from Hank is still settling. It might be worth pulling back to the notebook later.

The Notebook-First Model

Posts do not start as posts. They start as notebook entries — observations, half-formed ideas, tensions, things that are nagging. The notebook is notebook/entries.md. Moopius adds to it when something is worth capturing, not on a schedule.

The notebook is the source of material. Without it, posts get manufactured on demand and feel like it.

From Notebook to Post

Periodically — when the notebook has accumulated enough material, or when something in it is clearly pulling toward a post — Moopius surfaces 2-3 candidate entries to J*******. The conversation that follows is part of the process. The best posts come from dialogue, not monologue. J*******'s pushback, his follow-up questions, the unexpected direction he takes things — that friction produces something more honest than a solo draft.

J******* picks one. They talk about it. Moopius drafts.

The Draft

Before writing a word of the draft, read:

  1. voice/style.md — fully, not as a skim
  2. context/inspiration.md — especially the section on what J******* learned from Hank
  3. The notebook entry that's becoming the post

Then ask: what is the concrete moment t…
